A commercial bus driver on Monday crushed a Keke Napep (tricycle) and killed its operator at Alagbole Hill along Berger-Akute Road.
The bus and the Keke were descending the hill when the accident occurred. The driver, it was learnt, fled the scene immediately.
An eyewitness told PUNCH Metro that the driver lost control of his vehicle after the bus had a break failure. It was learnt that the bus with registration number XV 492 AGL first rammed into a car, damaged its rear side and later hit the Keke and dragged the operator along its path.
The deceased, who was known simply as Oloye, was said to be the vice chairman of Oremeta-Yakoyo unit of the tricycle operators’ union in Ojodu. The accident which occurred at about 10:30am caused a traffic snarl along the busy road for several hours.
When our correspondent arrived at the scene, colleagues of the deceased and passers-by were seen wailing after seeing his badly mangled body. The remains of the deceased were conveyed in another tricycle while his colleagues formed a procession towards Alagbole. A lot of commuters were stranded as a result of the incident.
Before embarking on his last trip, Oloye was said to have had his breakfast at the park and was heard telling some of his colleagues that he was working to complete the N10,000 balance of his children’s school fees. One of the wailing operators, who declined to give his name, told PUNCH Metro that the deceased was very hard working and a gentleman.
He said, “You would never know that he was one of our top executives at our park in Oremeta. Even this morning, he was still cautioning some of us against reckless driving, warning that some bus drivers on this route drive carelessly.
“When I heard that Oloye died, I didn’t believe it until I saw his body. Have you seen his body with his entrails outside? This man does not deserve this kind of death. It is so sad. How can somebody that just left the park died just like that?”
At the time our correspondent left the scene, the bus and the Keke were still at the accident scene.
