Kano State Police Command, yesterday, said that a total of 18 explosives were planted in Bayero University, Kano, within the last nine days.They said that the good thing however, was that they were all defused by bomb experts of the State Police Command.
Speaking at the Bompai Headquarters of the Kano State Police Command, Police Commissioner, Mr. Ibrahim Idris said while 14 of the Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) were found on the main campus of BUK on May 8th , 2012, three other IEDs were recovered at various locations within the University.
Giving the details, he stressed that “On April 29 this year, after the bomb attack in BUK, the Command Bomb Disposal Unit recovered IEDs and 14 other canned Improvised Explosive Devices at the university premises which were successfully evacuated”.
He added that “on May 1st ,2012, another bomb was discovered at the Faculty of Sociology of the same university while on May 8th 2012, three bombs were found at various corners at the University main campus, which were equally evacuated and defused by bomb experts attached to the state Police Command
The Police boss expressed concern over the development, adding that the Police had met with the university security chiefs and had consequently advised the BUK authorities and other tertiary institutions in the state to be vigilant. The Commissioner emphasized that security officers attached to higher institutions in the state have important roles to play in the present situation by ensuring that every persons, carriages, vehicles and motorcycles entering the university were subjected to rigorous screening and search .
He said that they have intensified raid on black spots in the state capital, adding that this approach has yielded commendable results, as over 98 suspects have been arrested with dangerous weapons or as a result of various offences ranging from armed robbery, possession of dangerous weapons, conspiracy to culpable homicide.
