UNILAG VC’s Family Suspects Foul Play – Vows to investigate death

1:51 AM

WAS the late Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Adetokunbo Sofoluwe poisoned or did he die of cardiac arrest? This question was the bone of contention at the meeting of the deceased’s family held on Monday in Lagos.
As a result, the burial of the late vice chancellor may be delayed for a while, owing to the decision of the family, which has vowed to investigate the cause of the death before final interment.
A source very close to the family told Nigerian Tribune on Monday that the relations of the dead professor determined to unravel the cause of his death.
The source stated this shortly after the family had met to discuss the final burial plans of the late vice chancellor.
Another source at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) also confirmed the plan of the family to do a thorough medical investigation on the death of Sofoluwe, saying some of them who came to the hospital did not agree with the medical report that the man died of cardiac arrest.
According to the source, the family meeting turned out to be a centre of arguments, where some of the relations alleged that their brother, Professor Sofoluwe, was poisoned.
This is coming barely 24 hours that the university’s management had set up a high-power burial committee headed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics and Research), Professor Babajide Alo, to work out the burial arrangements.
However, the university’s management said that Professor Sofoluwe suffered a heart attack while in his office at the Department of Computer Science but managed to call his doctor from the Medical Centre who came to his rescue and took him to the medical centre in an ambulance and subsequently transferred him to LUTH where he was diagnosed with Myocardial Infarction.
The statement by the management read: “Sofoluwe was resuscitated before being transferred to the High Dependency Unit in Ward E8 of LUTH. Unfortunately, he suffered a second heart attack and all efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. Post-mortem examination has since been carried out and this has confirmed the cause of death to be of cardiac origin.”
