Zamfara: Sharia Officials Jailed for ‘Camping’ Ladies

1:58 AM

The High Sharia Court Tudun Wada in Gusau metropolis of Zamfara State has sentenced two officials of the state Hisbah Commission to 14 months in prison and 15 strokes of the cane each for camping some ladies at an undisclosed location.

The two officials, Alhaji Lawali Abubakar Maradun and Alhaji Umar Idris, were found guilty under Section 155 of the Sharia Penal Code.

Delivering his judgment on Friday, the sharia court judge, Alhaji Lawal Sale Gusau, said the two accused were found guilty of the offence, having made confessional statement of committing the act.

He said it was unfortunate that the officials, who were supposed to ensure the enforcement of sharia laws, would participate in an act that did not only tarnish their image as Muslims, but even affected the commission negatively.

“To serve as a deterrent to others, this court has no option but to sentence the accused to 14 months in prison and 15 strokes of the cane, based on Section 296 of the sharia criminal procedure code,” he said.

He, however, ruled that the convicts had the right to appeal within 30 days.
