Petros Ncube (52) of Jibajiba Village reportedly killed his wife, Shirmy Nkiwane (50), on Sunday.
The walls of the kitchen hut in which he allegedly killed her were reportedly spattered with blood and a bloody axe was found beside her body by her brother who was looking for her.
The police spokesperson , Assistant Inspector Siphiwe Makonese, confirmed the incident.
She said a manhunt had since been launched for the suspect, who has not been seen since the discovery of the body.
“Ncube and Nkiwane were in the process of finalising their divorce. They were awaiting a ruling from the magistrate’s courts on how they would share the property they accumulated during their years of marriage,” said Asst Insp Makonese.
She said Ncube got a summons from the court and went to his wife’s homestead.
“He asked her to accompany him to his homestead so that they could share the maize crop they had harvested in preparation for their final court appearance. The two went to Ncube’s homestead together on Sunday. Ms Nkiwane’s brother, Mr Aisha Nkiwane, went looking for her when she took too long to return,” said Asst Insp Makonese.
She said Mr Nkiwane stumbled onto the scene of the brutal killing at Ncube’s deserted homestead.
“There was blood everywhere. His sister was lying in a pool of blood. There was a bloody axe by her side and she had a deep gash on her left cheek,” she said.
The police spokesperson said a report was made at Lupane Police Station and investigations into the killing were underway.
“The accused is still at large and police investigations are in progress,” said Asst Insp Makonese.
She advised couples to seek counselling from traditional leaders, churches, the police or elders in their communities when they had marital problems instead of getting violent.
Asst Insp Makonese expressed concern over the viciousness with which crimes of passion are often committed.
“You cannot kill another human being as if you are slaughtering a chicken. It is even more shocking that people do such things to people they claim to be deeply in love with,” she said.
Asst Insp Makonese appealed to members of the public who might have information that could lead to Ncube’s arrest to contact their nearest police station.
“If those with information wish to remain unknown, they can put the information in police suggestion boxes or call (0281) 32739,” she said.
