Policeman Goes Berserk; Shot Dead After Killing Inspector, Injuring 2 Constables

1:35 PM

A police corporal went berserk in Michika yesterday killing  an inspector and wounding twoconstables. While the inspector died on the spot, the two constables were responding to treatment at the Michika General Hospital as at the time of filing this report.

It was gathered that the police constable signed for a gun as normally required of them and shot the late inspector and the two constables.

"The police who were on joint patrol tried to arrest him to prevent him from killing innocent civilians. But when they could not arrest him, he was gunned down," Inspector Ibrahim Mohammed said. He also disclosed that a group was reported to have planted some explosives around the police station in Mubi and in the course of exchange of fire, one of the gunmen was killed but refuted the reports that eight persons were killed in the two incidents.

The constable in Michika lawfully signed to go for duty but decided to open fire on his colleagues, including an inspector of Police and two constables.

He said it was confirmed that it had been the behavioral pattern of the late corporal who several times mockingly would target his superior but unfortunately carried out his action by killing the inspector. Meanwhile, the commercial nerve centre of Adamawa State, Mubi was said to have suffered another attack by unknown gunmen with two police officer killed and six civilians, resident around Ribawa Police Station were gunned down with many causalities hospitalized at Mubi General Hospital. However, unconfirmed source said eight people died as a result of bomb blast at Ribawa Police Station at the outskirts of Mubi.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ibrahim Mohammed, confirmed to Daily Sun that the attackers were gunmen and not suicide bombers.  The situation had apparently further paralyzed the commercial nerve centre of the state, which for almost a year ago had suffered economic setback following the killing of 12 people in the metropolis.

Mohammed said two incidents occurred in the Mubi Area Police command comprising the five local government areas of the state, one at Mubi metropolis and the other one at Michika town within the week.

The police imagemaker also said the command was still investigating the two incidents while the situation in the two towns were being brought under control.
