Tension As Bayelsa Sacks Council Chairmen

1:57 PM

Five out of the eight local government chairmen in Bayelsa State were sacked on Thursday by the state government following the recommendations of the state House of Assembly.

Our correspondent gathered that those affected by the decision of the lawmakers were Chief Tiwei Orunimighe(Southern Ijaw), Ngo Sylva (Brass), Eddy Julius (Ekeremor), Pere Pereotu (Sagbama) and Sammy Boy(Ogbia).

It was learnt that the vice-chairmen of the councils were immediately sworn-in by the state Chief Judge, Justice Kate Abiri, in a brief ceremony that was held at the Government House.

It was gathered that the report of investigations into the activities of local government administrators by the House indicted the chairmen whose tenures were due to expire in six months.

Investigations revealed that the House arrived at the decision in a closed-door meeting that lasted over six hours on Tuesday.

Tempers were said to have flared in the meeting as some of the lawmakers opposed the recommendation on the grounds that sacking the local councils would create fresh security challenges in the state.

But the majority of the lawmakers, who attended the plenary session were said to have approved the suggestion which was forwarded to the office of the Deputy-Governor, Mr. John Jonah.

A statement by the Senior Special Assistant to Jonah on Media, Mr. Ebi Evisson, said, "The affected chairmen were removed from office by the State House of Assembly on account of gross misconduct in accordance with section 24(6) of the State Local Government Law 2000 as amended".

Our correspondent observed that security was beefed up at strategic areas in the state including the secretariats of the affected local government councils to avert a breakdown of law and order.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Fidelix Odunna, said the police would not allow the supporters of the sacked chairmen to stage a protest that could lead to the breakdown of law and order, asking them to seek redress in court.
