Nigerian Sports Award: Mikel Named Sports Man Of The Year

Chelsea’s John Mikel Obi on Thursday emerged the Sports Man of The year at the first Nigerian Sports Awards held at the Palace Hotel in Victoria Island.

Mikel, who won double awards at the ceremony, was earlier named the Footballer of the year, male category by the Awards Commitee, headed by Ikeddy Iziguzo, the Chairman, Editorial Board of Vanguard Neswpapers.


Barrister Dudu Orumen received the awards on behalf of the England-based star. The Special Sports Personality of the Year award went Yakubu Adesokan, who had the highest votes ahead of paralympic colleague, Adefemi Ojo.

Feyisetan Are emerged the  Coach of the Year, beating Edwin Okon and Ayo Bakare, while Ike Diogu, who was part of D’Tigers’ team to London Olympics, won the Ball Sports Year award. Francesca Ordega won the women’s Footballer of the Year award, Super Falcons emerged the Team of the year, while the Sports Woman of the Year award went to folashade Oluwafemiayo.

The others are: Tobi Emmanuel (Sports Journalist of the Year Print), Cecilia Omorege of Galazy  (Sports Journalist of the Year Electronic). The Lifetime Sports Award went to former Commonwealth champion, Modupe Oshikoya,.
