Man Of Steel Makes $46 Million On Friday On Its Way To Huge Box Office Weekend image

Everybody knew Man of Steel was going to be huge this weekend, but the size of it's box office so far ought to surprise even the most devoted Supes supporters. According to the early numbers at Deadline Man of Steel pulled in an estimated $46 million on Friday, including between $9 and $10 million from midnight shows alone.

It's now on track for $120 million for the weekend proper, with another $12 million on top of that if you count a series of showing on Thursday night held as a promotion from Wal-Mart (yes, that really happened). That's more than twice what Superman Returns made on its opening weekend in 2006-- that film debuted to $52 million and topped out with just $200 million in the United States, a number Man of Steel ought to be able to pass after its second weekend.

Unlike other recent blockbusters like Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness, Man of Steel didn't open overseas before debuting in the U.S., so it's busy tearing up international box office as well. The Hollywood Reporter writes that it opened in 24 markets and made $17.6 million on Friday, putting it on track to make $82 million by the end of the weekend. By the time the weekend is over, Man of Steel will have nearly made back what the studio reports it cost to make.
