#CODED-ish Gist:: Chris Okotie under fire as Nigerians blast his comments on Catholicism

8:22 PM

Nigeria’s controversial preacher and former presidential candidate of Fresh Democratic Party, Rev Chris Okotie has been widely criticised by Christians and non-Christians alike over his comments that all Catholics in the world will go to hell because they worship Satan and are led by an anti-Christ Pope whom he described as a friend of the devil.

The comments of the once popular rock star turned celebrity preacher and politician provoked Catholics and members of other denominations who questioned his moral rectitude to make such comments.

Below are some of the randomly picked comments on a popular forum

I was born into the Catholic church. I grew and was tutored there. It was there that i was thought that there is only one God and he alone shall we worship. It was there that i was thought that we should not bow in worship to any image or likeness of man. It was there that i was thought that Mary should not and cannot be worshiped. It was there that i learn that you can not worship God and money at the same time as is the practice among men today.

All these teachings i received were backed up by the law of the church. So which aspect of the Catholic church is vexing ppl to condemn it so much. I think the major problem is not with the non-Catholics but with Catholics who don't really know what their faith is all about. No Saint is worshiped in the Catholic Church and no object is worshiped in the Catholic Church. If you really want to know the rights or wrong of the Catholic Church, you need to free your mind from prejudice and allow ursef to be led by the Holy Spirit for understanding cos most things in the Catholic Church which you see us doing are just symbolic manifestation of a purely spiritual exercise. May God guide you in the quest for more knowledge.

Who are you to JUDGE!!! The Bible says in Matthew 7:1-3
1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.
2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

hahahaha... the voice of ignorance speaks... i thought he was an educated man, an educated person should do their research before placing their claims/facts. i am a catholic and i do not worship idols. most of all i believe in Heaven. i am strongly for penance and the forgiveness of sins. its a pity that even a pastor/man of GOD can judge.
and yet the bible says:
Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye. MAT 7:1-5

Let's take a look at this man called Pastor Chris critically.
He got married to his first wife n lived with her for decades and could not get her pregnant. While still married, he had his eyes set on another man's wife.
He broke up their marriage n eventually married her(Stephanie)
While living in his house, he made sure Stephanie did not have adequate access and motherly love to the kids she had for the first husband
Married her for over a decade, yet belle we no see
"dry bones shall rise again right"
A 2x divorcee is taking on the Catholic Church
Go and bury your head in shame or better still, use ur time to advice Nigerians on the latest spotting waves relaxer in town.
He goat!

I will only advice Chris to first go and resolve his marriage issues, and pray for Gods forgiveness. If he dont have any thing to preach to the congregation, they can pray and sing praises, rather than talking about church that doesnt even know that he Chris exist, must he always rubbish himself in public,is that the best way to create awareness or advertise even if he must talk, let him talk with decorum. If he actually hear from God to be Nigerian president he dont need to struggle for it,even who among his women will be the first lady.pls Chris go home u have alot of work to do.I wonder what those remaining people in that ur church is still doing there.

This is clearly Sapele Water talking. By their actions, you shall know them. I'll wager a dollar that the Rev. Chris Okotie probably had up to 0.25 of alcohol in his bloodstream when he was making such pronouncements. If you probably ask him today, after he has become sober, he will deny that he did not say such things or he was misquoted.

He may be controversial and out of control, but has a point here. The most important and the next important laws of the bible are the ones they break everyday with impunity. Jesus is not a statue and peter, Mary and other apostles' of Christ's statues should also not be worship. Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. And Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

It was also gathered at St Leo Catholic Church located on Toyin Street in Allen - Opebi area of Lagos that the Catholic Church will react officially to the comments, some members of the church said Okotie’s utterances were too reckless for someone who lays claims to pious credentials.

Reacting to Okotie’s utterances, Pastor Kingsley Onyekanna appealed to Catholic faithful not to ridicule the Christian religion by joining issues with the pastor, saying the matter should be left in the hands of God.

He said, “I don’t want to probe the veracity or otherwise of Reverend Chris Okotie’s allegations against some churches and prophets. I will rather leave that to the all-knowing God to prove who is His and who is not”.

He added that his grouse with the preacher is his resolve to organise a beauty pageant in his church next week, wondering if the preacher is set to marry another wife, having married twice and divorced twice.

For Mathew Ahiante, a devout Catholic, Pastor Okotie has committed heresy for describing the Pope as an anti-Christ and a friend of devil, saying the preacher should be critically examined to ascertain his state of mind.

“Catholic system has the largest number of Christians in the world today. Pastors like Okotie are appendages of the breakaway faction of the Christian faith and all of them are called churches and allowed to use the title Reverend.

“But when you look at what pastors like Okotie do and their lifestyle, it contradicts what the Bible says. So, they are the anti-Christs, not the Pope”.

Also reacting to the utterances, Paul Chukwudima said Rev Chris Okotie should be ignored, saying the preacher thrives in controversies.
