#CODED-ish News:: ASUU To Sue Over Iyayi’s Death

7:59 AM

Human Rights lawyer Femi Falana says the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and family members have mandated him to challenge the death of former ASUU president Professor Festus Iyayi court.
He did not say who they would sue, but speaking in Benin yesterday at a funeral procession in honour of Professor Iyayi, Falana urged ASUU never to relent in the struggle but continue where Iyayi left. He vowed to ensure that recklessness on the roads by government officials is  stopped.
The funeral ceremony of the late professor began in Benin yesterday with a solidarity march by ASUU members and civil society groups. Members of UNIBEN branch of ASUU were joined by hundreds of their colleagues from the University of Ilorin, Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma (AAU) and Delta State University (DELSU) Abraka.
Other groups represented included the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Conference of Non-Governmental Organisations (CONGOS) Joint Action Front (JAF) and the Parents Consultative Association  of Nigerian Universities (PCANU). The march which began inside the University of Benin  at about 10 am took them about five kilometers to the residence of the late Iyayi off Benin/Lagos expressway.

Addressing the gathering, Chairman of UNIBEN ASUU, Dr. Anthony Monye-Emina, described Iyayi as one of Nigeria’s number one fallen heroes and a hero of ASUU struggles.  He said the march was the beginning of activities to mark the exit of the late don. Eldest son of Iyayi, Engr. Ehidiamen Iyayi, who received the mourners on behalf of the family, thanked them for their support since the death of his father.
