It was like a movie yesterday when a middle-aged man, Abdul Kareem Olalere, took a fatalistic step by jumping down from the Mokola, Ibadan over-head bridge in an attempt to escape from motorcycle robbers.
The victim who was pursued from an undisclosed bank, where he had gone to withdraw N300,000 to the spot said he considered the dangerous move as better option than to allow the robbers take away the money and probably lose his life in the process.
It was gathered that the suspected robbers were on another motorcycle, trailing him from the bank to the top of the bridge, where they ordered the motorcycle operator on which he was a passenger to pull out.
On his University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan bed where he spoke with newsmen, he said he had asked the motorcyclist conveying him to increase the speed, but when the robbers brought out gun and ordered him to pull out, he (the victim) asked the cyclist to ìparkî to avoid being gunned down.
Face to face with the options of either to surrender the money to them and possibly got shot at close range or to jump down from the bridge, he decided to take the latter option and in the process got his arm broken.
To however ensure that the money was saved, he dropped it before jumping down, not minding what would become of him, noting that the robbers had accosted him from the bank where he had gone to collect the money.
Fortunately for him, the policemen and traffic warden who were at the roundabout controlling traffic assisted him in grabbing the money which they immediately deposited with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at the Mokola Police Station.
It was gathered from some of the relatives of the victim who had paid him a visit at the hospital that the DPO confirmed receipt of the money and equally assured that the money was in safe hands but that the life of Olalere was more important.
