Tragedy struck gain in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State on Monday when a village head was killed and several others injured by people suspected to be Fulani herdsmen.
Nigerian Tribune learnt that the suspected herdsmen sneaked into Nangam village in the local government area in the early hours of Monday and released several gunshots into the air before descending on the inhabitants of the village.
Many were injured while the village head was shot at close range.
A member of Plateau State House of Assembly who hails the the constituency, Hoourable Daniel Dem, confirmed the incident which he described as unfortunate and unwarranted.
He noted that the attack had been on for a very long time despite the heavy presence of military men in the area.
Speaking with newsmen on the frequent killings in his constituency, the senator representing Plateau North, Senator Gyang Dangtong, observed that the renewed ethnic violence in the zone had led to the destruction of life and property and declaration of emergency rule.
According to him, close to 5,000 people had been displaced as a result of the incessant Fulani attacks, adding that the majority of them were in the neighbouring Kaduna and Nasarawa states.
In a related development, a group, christened Berom Development Association, in a press statement made available to the Nigerian Tribune and signed by its national president, Francis Jamang, described the attacks as a deliberate effort to reduce the population of their people and to wipe out highly skilled industrious and able bodied sons of the land and to frighten them out of their inheritance.
