#CODED-ish TechNews:: Facebook Messenger is now a universal iOS app

Facebook Messenger, one of the popular forerunners in the land of messaging apps, has gradually scored more and more novel features over the last few months, as Facebook is trying hard to up the game of its dedicated messaging app in any way possible.

After all, it is facing fierce competition from the likes of Viber, Line, and Skype. One of Facebook's latest efforts to boost the popularity of its Messenger even further is making a universal iOS app. That's right, heretofore the app was only available for the iPhone, but from now on iPad users can snatch the messaging app and chat with their Facebook friends directly from their beloved tablets.

Fortunately, the neat feature that allows you to call your FB friends through Wi-Fi or cellular data is also present. Of course, the full bag of Facebook Messenger features are also on board – you can not only spice up your chat conversations with a wide variety of peculiar or wacky emoji stickers, but also snap photos or even record brief videos directly from the app itself. Chat heads are here, too.

Over the last few months, Facebook acquired WhatsApp for a pretty impressive sum of money, brought Messenger to the Windows Phone platform, and also released the Snapchat-like Slingshot app, which operates on the “tit-for-tat” principle and allows you to send self-destructing photos or videos to your Facebook peers. It seems that Facebook truly wants to be one of the top players in the field of mobile messaging.

CODED-ish News:: [WATCH VIDEO]Bill Gates admits Control-Alt-Delete was a mistake, blames IBM

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has finally admitted that forcing users to press the Control-Alt-Delete key combination to log into a PC was a mistake. In an interview at a Harvard fundraising campaign, Gates discusses his early days building Microsoft and the all-important Control-Alt-Delete decision.

If you've used an old version of the software or use Windows at work then you will have experienced the odd requirement. Gates expains the key combination is designed to prevent other apps from faking the login prompt and stealing a password.

"It was a mistake," Gates admits to an audience left laughing at his honesty. "We could have had a single button, but the guy who did the IBM keyboard design didn't wanna give us our single button." David Bradley, an engineer who worked on the original IBM PC, invented the combination which was originally designed to reboot a PC.

CODED-ish News::PayPal Mistakenly Credits Man With $92 Quadrillion

We've heard of going from rags to riches before, and in Monopoly, we'd occasionally pluck the "Bank Error" card from the Community Chest and collect $200. But even winning the lottery doesn't come close to the good fortune that temporarily befell Chris Reynolds, a Delaware County resident who went to bed with no money in his PayPal account and awoke to find that a $92 quadrillion credit.

"I'm just feeling like a million bucks," Reynolds said in a statement, according to Philly.com. "At first I thought that I owed quadrillions. It was quite a big surprise."

It was also a short lived one. This was an obvious error on PayPal's part, and unlike Monopoly, you don't get to go around the board with your newfound riches while the bank shrugs off the error. PayPal corrected its enormous mistake, returning Reynolds' account balance back to $0 instead of $92,233,720,368,547,800 that it had been.

Still, it was nice to dream, and had the unusually large money transfer stayed in his account, Reynolds planned to pay the national debt (a mere $16.7 trillion currently) and then acquire the Phillies baseball team, assuming he could negotiate "a great price."

TECH NEWS: Apple's Future iPhone May Cost as Less as $99

Apple has plans to release a lower cost iPhone that will sell for 99 dollars. The next version of the software for the iPhone will be incredibly different than past versions.

Apple is reportedly looking at iPhones with bigger screens and will be releasing the low cost phone in a range of colors as soon as this year, the ABC News reports.

According to the report, Apple declined to comment on the rumors, but CEO Tim Cook addressed the question of larger screens last month at the All Things D conference. Cook also said the iPhone doesn't have a larger screen right now for a few reasons.

He said that a large screen today comes with a lot of tradeoffs, adding that people do look at the size, but they also look at things like if the photos show the proper color, the white balance, reflectivity, battery life, brightness, the longevity of the display.

The phone is made of a plastic casing and will come in five or six different colors. Besides releasing a cheaper model of the phone, Apple will release the iPhone 5S later this year.

It will be an update with some small additions and tweaks.

Sony Unveils Waterproof Xperia Z Phone

Sony has announced a new smartphone that can be used in the shower or bath without the risk of damage, reports BBC News. The Xperia Z can also record HDR (high dynamic range) video, a facility borrowed from its camera division. The Android-powered device was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The handset has a 5in (12.7cm) screen and is said to be capable of being submerged in water of up to one metre (3.3 ft) in depth for 30 minutes. It features a 13 megapixel camera and 4G LTE data connectivity, a Micro SD slot, and a 1080p x 1920p high-definition screen that borrows technology from Sony’s Bravia TV division to enhance video playback.

Apple Roaring Back With New iPhone, iPads

 Apple's dropping stock price may have plunged the tech giant's market capitalization below $500 billion for the first time in months, but one financial analyst believes new iPhones and iPads will have sales roaring back in time for the holidays and into 2013.

The release of the iPhone 5 and two new iPads will help Apple beat revenue projections in the last three months of 2012, according to Morgan Stanley's Katy Huberty, who sent a note to investors Friday that was picked up by CNET.

What's more, Apple could be looking at lower prices from suppliers of components for its iDevices, according to Huberty. This despite a recent rumor that Samsung had raised the price of the ARM-based A-Series chips it makes for Apple by 20 percent, which a Samsung executive reportedly denied a few days later.

Samsung's Galaxy S3 Beats iPhone

South Korean electronics firm Samsung's Galaxy S3 has outsold Apple's iPhone 4S for the first time, becoming the world's best-selling smartphone, says research firm Strategy Analytics.

Samsung sold 18 million models, compared with Apple's 16.2 million sales, in the third quarter of 2012.

The Galaxy S3 "has proven wildly popular with consumers and operators," said Strategy Analytics' Neil Mawston.

British engineers produce amazing 'petrol from air' technology

A small company in the north of England has developed the “air capture” technology to create synthetic petrol using only air and electricity. Experts last night hailed the astonishing breakthrough as a potential “game-changer” in the battle against climate change and a saviour for the world’s energy crisis.

The technology, presented to a London engineering conference this week, removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The “petrol from air” technology involves taking sodium hydroxide and mixing it with carbon dioxide before "electrolysing" the sodium carbonate that it produces to form pure carbon dioxide. Hydrogen is then produced by electrolysing water vapour captured with a dehumidifier.

24-year-old Nigerian Undergraduate Builds Working Helicopter From Junk

A 24-year-old undergraduate from Nigeria is building helicopters out of old car and bike parts. Mubarak Muhammed Abdullahi, a physics student, spent eight months building the yellow model seen here, using the money he makes from repairing cellphones and computers. While some of the parts have been sourced from a crashed 747, the chopper contains all sorts of surprises.

The 12-meter-long aircraft, which has never flown above a height of seven feet, is powered by a secondhand 133 horsepower engine from a Honda Civic. In the basic cockpit there are two Toyota car seats, with a couple more in the cabin behind. Controls are simple, with an ignition button, an accelerator lever to control vertical thrust and a joystick that provides balance and bearing. A camera beneath the chopper connected to a small screen on the dash gives the pilot ground vision, and he communicates via a small transmitter.

Judge Will Hear Apple's Request for Samsung Injunction in December

A court in California has scheduled a hearing for Dec. 6 on Apple's request for a permanent injunction against eight Samsung phones, according to court papers filed Tuesday. Meanwhile, the court will hear next month Samsung's plea to vacate an earlier preliminary injunction against its Galaxy Tab 10.1.

A jury in California District Court determined Friday that Samsung's phones infringed two design patents and three utility patents held by Apple, and also diluted one registered "trade dress" and one unregistered trade dress, which has to do with the look and feel of the products and their packaging.

The South Korean company must pay Apple just over US$1 billion for infringing several of its patents in Samsung smartphones and tablets, the jury decided.

Google Achieves 100 Per cent Mapping Target for Nigeria, Others

SEARCH giant, Google has announced that it has achieved 100 per cent target in the area of mapping for Nigeria and other African countries.

Wikipedia defines mapping as map-making and often used instead of cartography, stressing that mapping term is also sometimes used for geospatial data collection.

The 100 per cent mapping achievement was disclosed by Google officials at the Regional Conference for super mappers across Africa, which kicked off in Lagos at the weekend, stressing that 100 per cent of Africa was now available on Google Map Maker.
