#CODED-ish News::New underwater hotel room lets guests sleep with the fishes[PHOTOS]

new underwater hotel room has opened off the coast of Tanzania for intrepid and adventurous ocean-loving travelers.
At The Manta Resort's underwater room, set off Pemba Island (also known as "the Green Island" in Arabic), guests are dropped off at a self-contained hotel that literally drifts at sea.
They can sunbathe on the top deck of their private island accommodations by day and dine on a water-level lounge deck. By night, they'll dive into the sea to access their hotel room, where they nod off among the fishes and their marine surroundings.
For an ethereal effect, the suite — built four meters (about 13 feet) below the surface — is lit by underwater spotlights that provide a backlit projection of the Indian Ocean's tropical sanctuary.
Part of the experience also lies in Pemba Island's isolation and lack of development as a tourist destination. The most reliable way to access the island is by chartered flights from Zanzibar. And while interest in the region is growing among divers for its unspoiled reefs, the area has yet to be paved by large-scale resorts and tourist crowds.

The suite was designed by Swedish
outfit Genberg Underwater Hotels, which opened its first underwater property in a Swedish lake near Stockholm in 2000. The Utter Inn is a single room that lies three meters below the surface and contains twin beds and a table.
The Manta Resort is the latest underwater guest experience to shake up the hotel industry. While the conventional trend has been to look skyward and snag bragging rights to building the tallest hotel or the highest penthouse, other hoteliers have been looking the other way, designing properties that maximize the beauty of tropical underwater environments.
Perhaps one of the best existing examples is the Ithaa Undersea Restaurant at the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island hotel, which consistently makes it onto travel bucket lists and lists of the most exclusive hotels. Set five meters (16 feet) below the surface, the fine-dining restaurant features 180-degree views of the coral gardens.
Polish developers have also revealed plans to build an ambitious, futuristic-looking luxury hotel in the Maldives that will be built partially underwater. Reminiscent of the Star Trek Enterprise, the spaceship-like property will be built seven meters above water on five pillars, while the lower deck will be built up to 30 meters below the surface.
Room rates at The Manta Resort start at $750 per person a night.

#CODED-ish News::Yorubas To Celebrate 200 Years In Ghana

Yorubas from all over Ghana will converge on the Aviation Social Centre in Accra on Saturday, November 23, 2013 to mark the anniversary of the arrival of their ancestors in the Gold Coast 200 years ago.

The Yorubas are an ethnic group found mainly in the western part of Nigeria. Some of their major towns are Lagos, Ibadan, Ilorin, Ogbomosho, Offa, Oshogbo, Abeokuta, Shaki, Oyo and Ijebu-Ode.

In the colonial days, when the then Gold Coast and Nigeria were under British rule, people from both countries travelled to each other's country as traders or public servants.

The first group of Yorubas arrived in the Gold Coast around 1813 and initially settled in such places as Accra, Kumasi and Sekondi before moving to the northern part of the Gold Coast, especially Tamale, Wa, Lawra and Nandom.

On Saturday, the Head of the Yoruba Community in Accra, Chief Barrister Basiru Peregrino Brimah, who is acclaimed as the leader of the Yorubas in Ghana, will receive other heads of Yoruba communities in Kumasi, Sekondi, Koforidua, Ashiaman, Cape Coast, Tamale and other major towns in Ghana to commemorate the migration of their ancestors to the Gold Coast.

Expected in Accra for the great occasion are Alhaji Ahmed Rufai Alao III, the Head of the Yoruba Community in Kumasi, and his counterparts Alhaji Abdul Wahab Raheem from Koforidua, Alhaji Rahman Babatunde Ajayi from Ashiaman and Alhaji Abdul Salami Adeniyi Amao Saka from Kasoa.

Other Yoruba leaders expected are Alhaji Shaibu Adebayo Bamijoko from Cape Coast, Alhaji Muhamadu Raji from Sekondi and Alhaji Ibrahim Bawa Yusif from Tamale, who will be accompanied by the Chairman of the Yoruba Community in the Northern Region, Mr Moses Oladele.

According to Alhaji Musah Baba, the President of the Nigerian Community in Ghana, Yoruba Heritage Awards would be presented to the former Lagos

State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, as well as the governors of Oyo and Oshun States, Senator Abiola Ajimobi and Alhaji Rauf Arabgesola, respectively, and the Chairman of the Energy Bank, Ghana, Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim.

Other recipients of the heritage award are the wife of the Ekiti State governor, Chief Bisi Fayemi; the Aare Musilimu of Yorubaland, Alhaji Arisekola Alao; the veteran actor and writer, Adebayo Faleti, and a former Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, Alhaji Musiliu Obanikoro.

Alhaji Baba also hinted that a book titled, "Exploits of A Migrant Community: Chronicle of Yorubas in Ghana", would be launched as part of the celebrations.

The Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, Mr Ademola Oluseyi Onafookan, will be the chief host at the ceremony.

#CODED-ish News::Fashola BANS Skating On Lagos Roads!!

"They cannot skate on the highways. It is a violation of the traffic law 2010. I implore all parents to call their children and their wards to order because any child found skating on the highway will be arrested and will be brought to justice. It must stop today. Skating on the highways has to stop now. The danger is too much and it is the responsibility of the government to safe lives,"

On skating, Fashola said he noticed that the youths had also taken to skating because the road is safe, saying government was not going to discourage them but that they should do that in designated places like recreation centres, stadia and others.

On the position of the government concerning road development in FESTAC Town, Fashola explained that the state government was having an issue with the Federal government, pointing out that the taxes and land charges being collected by the FHA were being sent to Abuja.

"I have said that the Federal Housing Authority is an anathema to the current constitution. The Federal Government does not own land, so, I don't see how it can have a housing authority. But it was created during the military and now that we are in a civilian dispensation, as I made a case on Saturday when we were in Sokoto, this is one of the laws that the National Assembly should simply amend or repeal to bring them in conformity with the current dispensation," he said.

On LASTMA, the governor pointed out that its primary responsibility was to keep the state traffic moving, stressing that "this is the reason why the agency exists. Arresting traffic offenders is secondary. If making an arrest will increase the traffic, let the offenders go. I say this not because I don't want law breakers to be apprehended and brought to justice. But law breakers cannot undermine our main objective.

"The longer people stay more in traffic, the more money is wasted and fuel are burnt and when people stay more in traffic, this leads to increase in the price of goods in the state. But with a moving traffic, price of goods will be stable."

Fashola explained that the challenge of managing traffic in Lagos State necessitated the need for the meeting with the Special Traffic Mayors, while stressing the need to pay attention to road safety measures for the betterment of all.

"Over the last few days, we have begun to experience traffic gridlock within the state. There are couples of factors that we all must be aware. We promised to address inner roads and at the moment we have commenced work on 200 inner roads in the state. It shouldn't be surprising that the construction is causing traffic in the state because these are areas where people are already living especially on Joel Ogunnaike, Kodesho and others.

"The access to those roads will definitely be impaired. That is part of the problem. Also, we are getting closer to the Christmas and New Year. At this time, there is heavy movement of people at the same time on the road," he explained.

A 40-year-old man from Nherera in Mhondoro suddenly grew br*asts after he allegedly stole and sold some cattles.

The Villagers believe the man identified as Acry Chinhivi Shayamano has been punished by the cattle owner.

50-year-old Hamilton Magaisa said, "We all know that Acry grew b**bs because of his thieving. People who steal are punished in so many ways. I have no sympathy for him."

Shayamano did admit that he was a thief but denied ever stealing a cattle.

"Who told you that I have grown b**bs. Mine are not that bad. I never stole anyone's cattle.

"I steal but not cattle. I stole some DVDs and I was arrested and ordered to pay a fine," he said.

He said his grandmother lost two cows in February and that was the time he noticed his b**bs growing. He said people just made a connection, which was not the case.

Acry said his b**bs were not painful but were still growing. He said the b**bs could be a side effect of the ARVs he was taking. He has been taking them for the past three years.

But some villagers are convinced that Acry is paying for his crime.

Psquare had performed in Accra, Ghana at the 'Glo and Bounce Slide' tour the night before. Adetu says Jude missed his flight and couldn't get back to Lagos in time for the nuptials.

But a source who was part of another artiste's entourage to Ghana for the concert says Jude Okoye did NOT travel to Ghana. 'We didn't see him, the twins were here with their band but we didn't see Jude', a source said.

#CODED-ish News::Keshi opens World Cup door for Yobo

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has said that skipper Joseph Yobo could still feature at the 2014 World Cup.

Yobo has been overlooked by Keshi since the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in February.

But Keshi has now revealed that he plans to ensure Yobo gets his record century of caps before the World Cup in Brazil and if he again proves his worth in those friendlies, he could still make it to Brazil 2014.

"Yobo is very much alive in this team than any other player. Yobo and I spoke before the game (vs Ethiopia) and our ambition is to make sure that he gets that 100th cap and by God's grace he will get it," Keshi said.

"Now the thing is will he be willing to come back? But we have been talking and he has said no problems.

So, why not, if he is here he would have his hundredth cap and if he is in shape, why not the World Cup?"

Yobo has featured at the 2002 and 2010 World Cups.

He lost his first-team in the Eagles to youngster Kenneth Omeruo at the 2013 AFCON in South Africa and even when Omeruo was sidelined by injury, he was not recalled and instead Warri Wolves defender Azubuike Egwuekwe filled in.

Ora's doctor, David Farcy, tells TMZ Rita was treated for heat exhaustion and dehydration. She's been discharged and Dr. Farcy says she's fine. Rita was in the middle of a photo shoot for Madonna's Material Girl campaign in Miami when she was taken ill.

British pop singer Rita Ora – who had the hit song, "R.I.P." — collapsed on the set of her photo shoot in Miami Beach today … and was rushed to a hospital by ambulance according to photographers on the scene.

Photos show the 22-year old singer/model/actress — eyes closed — being unloaded from the ambulance on a stretcher … attended by emergency personnel. So far, no word on what may have caused her to collapse.

Ora — who famously dated Rob Kardashian last year — was reportedly preparing for her photo shoot on the beach near the SoHo Beach House hotel when she fainted in her makeup trailer.

#CODED-ish News::Students’ Day celebrated Amidst ASUU STRIKE in Nigerian Varsities[PHOTO]

The need for a more vibrant student unionism in the country resonates as the world celebrates students' day, CHARLES ABAH writes

Madu Justin, a-300 Level Business Administration student of the University of Benin, looked helpless on Sunday. He practically did not do anything tangible on that day. Apart from the church service he attended, the 21-year-old undergraduate could not explain how the day went.
He was just at home soliloquising and thinking of what has befallen him and the majority of the Nigerian students. Four days earlier, the young man had thought that Sunday would have ended his long stay at home following an industrial action embarked upon by members of the Academic Staff of Nigerian Universities since July 1.
He had hoped that following the alleged fruitful discussions President Goodluck Jonathan had with ASUU leadership and the subsequent planned convocation of the union's National Executive Council meeting in Kano last Wednesday, the strike would end on Sunday. So, he bubbled with enthusiasm and optimism, intermittently dusting his books, getting set to return to school.
However, the bubble ruptured on Tuesday. The NEC meeting where ASUU members would have decided whether to call off the strike or not could not hold following the death of a former ASUU President, Dr. Festus Iyayi, who interestingly was a teacher at the UNIBEN. Iyayi died along the -Lokoja Abuja Road in an accident involving the convoy of Kogi State Governor, Idris Wada. The academic was on his way to Kano to attend the ASUU NEC meeting when the incident happened. Although, the rest looks like history now, the academic community is mourning and the issue of resumption of schools is now on hold. The strike is 142 days today.
Justin had also looked forward to last Sunday because it coincided with the International Students Day, which is marked every November 17. He had looked forward to celebrating this day on campus.
On November 17, 1939, the Nazis – German occupation forces – stormed the dormitories of the University of Prague and took away more than 1,200 students to concentration camps. The forces also executed nine student representatives on the occasion. Following this development, students from Europe converged on London and there the International Students Council, in accordance with the allies, declared November 17, as the International Students Day. Ever since then, students in their quest for truly 'democratic' education and society meet on this day.
It was therefore not surprising that across the world two days ago burning issues concerning education, democracy, egalitarianism and students activism, among other academic or social activities, topped the gatherings on campuses.
But in Nigeria, there were little or no activity in its more than 70 public universities. In fact, the day dedicated to the observance of student activism largely went unnoticed. The majority of the Justins were at home bemoaning their fate, especially with regard to the continued closure of their schools.
Again, had schools been in session, many analysts and students argue, there would not have been any difference as student activism seems to have died in the country. They posit that pecuniary interest has taken over the mandate of the student unionism in Nigeria.
According to Kayode Shittu of the University of Ibadan, student activism has waned in the country. He notes that many of the participants in students' struggle today are political jobbers guided by economic interest.
Nowadays, many student leaders are government agents and contractors, he insists, noting, "That is why they are even opposed to ASUU in its current face-off with the Federal Government.
"For so many years now, have you heard NANS, for instance, strongly canvassing anything that will benefit the generality of Nigerian students? Cases of sexual harassment, cultism, extortion, arbitrary tuition increment and poor infrastructure, among others, abound on campuses. What has NANS done to stop such."
Also, the Executive Director, Civil Liberties Organisation, Mr. Ibuchukwu Ezike, notes that student activism has collapsed in the country.
He says, "The truth, however, is that since 1994, when the son of a former police boss was sponsored by the state to clinch NANS presidency, the umbrella organisation of all student movements in Nigeria has collapsed.
"What has contributed more to this decline is the challenges that face human rights movements such as the CLO, Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, Campaign for Democracy, United Action for Democracy and the death of Chief Gani Fawehinmi, who spurred students activists by giving them free legal services and support."
The President of Campaign for Democracy, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, agrees with the CLO chief.
She notes, "I can describe the students' movement in Nigeria as being in a very sorry state."
"We cannot but agree that the infiltration into students' movement by the political class in Nigeria has gradually eroded the spirit of activism among the students. Today, student unionism is largely controlled by state-sponsored elements who have jettisoned the essence of activism for the pursuance of personal interest and wealth."
But the National Association of Nigerian Students President, Yinka Gbadebo, disagrees. He insists that the union has lived up to expectations in pursing the cause of students and in the promotion of democratic culture in the country.
Noting that NANS organised a seminar in Lagos on Sunday in commemoration of the International Students Day, he states that all hope is not yet lost in student unionism in the country. In fact, he promises to speak more to our correspondent after the ISD to respond to some of the criticisms against the association. But he did not respond to later calls and text messages sent to his telephones.
However, another student, Yetunde Salau of the Lagos State University, Ojo, shares Gbadebo's view. She notes that student unionism in the country should not be totally written off. According to her, it has produced the likes of the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, as well as other politicians and academics and so cannot be dismissed with a wave of the hand.
But as Gbadebo and Salau hold this view, Ezike, who was NANS Financial Secretary in 1992, notes that there is need to revisit the establishment of cadres and popular movements on campuses. This, he says, will help to resurrect student activism in country.
Similarly, Okei-Odumakin states, "My advice to students is that they should use the opportunity of this year's celebration to holistically review the past historic role of the students' movement in Nigeria and use such to redefine a future for NANS in line with global practices by other national students unions."

#CODED-ish News::: ASUU, FG Negotiation Null and Void – Senate C’ttee

Implementation of the agreement between the Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, may have to be delayed as the Chairman, Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service Matters, Aloysius Etok, has said that the ongoing negotiations between the duo would be null and void without the input of National Wages and Salaries Commission.
Senator Etok stated this during an oversight tour of the Commission. He said that under no guise should the Federal Government negotiate salary or wage increase without the input of the relevant commission.
He attributed most of the incessant industrial actions in the country to sentimental negotiation for salary increase in the civil service.
He said: "We have said this earlier that on no account should Federal Government negotiate salary increase or anything that has to do with wages or salaries without the input of the Commission.
"They should avoid the issue of sentimental increase or negotiation and there should be no exceptions. Four months is about a semester."
Etok further stated that the commission was expected to have played a prominent role in the 2009 agreement reached between the Federal Government and ASUU.

The Etok-led committee also demanded explanations from the commission on how the 2013 appropriation was implemented and why the impact of the commission was not felt on civil servants salaries crises that threaten some sectors of the economy from time to time.
He lamented the withholding of part of the 2013 budget of the commission, stressing that the commission required funds to carry out its research-based projects, calling for its immediate release so that the commission can implement its budget to the full.
He said: "The commission might look small but the importance cannot be overestimated. We have come to know your level of im-plementation of 2013 budget.
"We also want to know the relevance of the commission to the Federal Government; why your impact is not felt in the salary problems across the country; why the commission would be there when ASUU is on strike for months and who guided the Federal Government in the agreement entered into with ASUU in 2009?
"You cannot be ruled out in the scheme of things in this country."
"They allowed ASUU compute its own salary"
Also speaking, Chairman of the commission, Dr. Richard Egbule, exonerated the com-mission from the agreement reached between the Federal Government and ASUU.
He said: "The Wages Commission has been up and doing in everything concerning wages and salaries in this country.
"When the controversial agreement was reached in 2009, we were there but not as negotiators. We made it known to them that the route they were going was wrong. Today, I wish to say that ASSU did not go on strike because of salaries because we handled it very well.
"What is controversial was the excess workload allowance, but we have asked them to employ more lecturers to avoid excess workload.
"There has never been a time any agency was asked to go and compute its own salary, but they allowed ASUU to do so. We needed a structural increase where government agency would be factored in."
Egbule noted with regret that successive leaderships of ASUU had established the culture of using industrial action to announce their arrival.
The Senate committee visited the National Assembly Service Commission, where the Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Umaru Fika, disclosed that N2.5 billion was appropriated to them in the 2013 fiscal year.
