#CODED-ish News:: [BUSTED] University Graduate Arrested for Forging Governor’s Letter-Head Paper

graduate-imageThe State Security Services (SSS) informed about the arrest of a university graduate for allegedly forging the official letter-head paper of the Nasarawa State Governor's Office.

Mr. Ngobiowei Awoikiega, the Assistant Director (Security) of the service in the state, revealed this in Lafia on November 29, 2013, Friday.

He said that the suspect was a graduate of Business Administration from the Nasarawa State University, Keffi.

Mr. Ngobiowei Awoikiega said the suspect (name was not disclosed) was arrested in Akwanga, headquarters of Akwanga Local Government Area of the state by the SSS operatives following a tip-off.

Awoikiega alleged that the suspect used the forged letter-head paper and subsequently forged the signature of the Secretary to the State Government, Zainab Abdulmumin, to introduce himself and one other person with the intent of gaining employment at the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi.

According to him, the suspect has made useful statements on the alleged offence.

"Unknown to officials of the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi, the management honoured the letter printed on the fake letter-headed paper from the Governor's Office by offering a provisional employment to his (suspect's) client."

Mr. Ngobiowei advised the general public to avoid falling victims of the activities of persons with fraudulent intentions.

Fielding questions from journalists, the suspect admitted committing the offence, saying that he did it because he could not secure employment since 2009, after his graduation from the university.

#CODED-ish Gist:: [REVEALED] See The Top-12 Abuja's Most Influential Business Ladies

Dozen of Abuja's Most Influential Business Ladies

It is the dream of everyone to be in leading and influential positions. If we look at Nigerian women then some of them are particularly influential, either by virtue of their being born into wealthy families, their marriage to people of affluence or by their business relationship with others.
In any case, those who are better placed always have some degree of influence wherever they find themselves. LEADERSHIP Friday has compiled the rating of ‘Abuja’s Most Influential’, either by virtue of their business, wealth, association or family. You may call them the ‘iron ladies’ if you wish to. But then…they deserve it.

While the political crisis between the two factions lasted and gathered momentum, her A-Class Park was marked for demolition by Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).  She cried out foul and raised the alarm that it was a case of political vendetta because of her membership of nPDP. However, after the entire wrangle, the park continued its operations. Who says Jummai is not influential?

#CODED-ish News: Babatunde Fashola Blasts Stella Oduah

Lagos State governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, has said that the two armoured cars bought at the cost of N255 million for the Minister of Aviation, Mrs. Stella Oduah, will purchase 51 patrol vehicles for the Nigerian Police.

The governor said this at the 7th annual Town Hall Meeting on Security, themed: 'Sustaining Local Responding To Rising National Security Challenges,' held at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos. "It is sad to know that the Federal Government that allocate three patrol vehicles for one state police command of 370, 000 police men, is unable to resolve how N255 million was used to purchase 2 saloon vehicles for one officer. It is a very grave irony. "The cost of average vehicle needed to patrol the state is just N5 million.

And with such fund, we will have put at least 51 patrol vehicles on the road, patrolling the streets of Lagos." "In spite of all this, they resist the idea of a state police. The money from the fund was in the last one year used to provide vehicles for the Nigerian Prison Service, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, National Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC and indeed the airport wing of the Nigerian police, is funded from this money. And it is the same aviation ministry that manage the airport that we had this very odious car scandal of N255 million."

The governor noted that the upshot of central Government's failure to confront security has continued for the past seven years. "The residents of Lagos have borne the burden of that neglect, and there is no indication that anything will change soon, in spite of endless reform deliberation and proposals." On the crime rate in the state, Fashola said "Our crime data base now has record content of 92, 488 which helps us to keep track of all those who have been arrested, prosecuted, jailed or have any contact with the criminal justice system." He added that the state is preparing for a future of crime prevention, saying "it will be technologically driven, scientifically grounded and result assured.".

#CODED-ish News::Zimbabwe Closes Down Nigerians Shops, Orders Arrest Of Traders

Zimbabwean authorities say they have given foreign shop-owners, mostly Chinese and Nigerian nationals, an ultimatum to shut down their businesses by 1 January 2014, hand them over to Zimbabweans or face arrest.

A top official of the black empowerment ministry said only Zimbabweans had the right to run shops that have sprung up across the country and are termed foreign businesses targeted under the nation's black empowerment laws, the state-controlled Herald newspaper reported Friday.

Permanent secretary for the empowerment ministry, George Magosvongwe, told a Parliamentary committee that the government would enforce regulations which reserve certain sectors of the economy to Zimbabweans on January 1, 2014.

Under the country's economic empowerment legislation, areas reserved for locals include retail and wholesale businesses, barbershops, hairdressings, beauty salons, bakeries, employment agencies and grain milling, among others.

Said Magosvongwe: "I confirm that some non-indigenous entities are still operating in the reserved sectors and there is a deadline for January 1 for them to comply with the requirement to relinguish their holdings in that sector.

"You will realise Mr Chairman that 1 January is a month to come and we are putting in place measures for enforcement in the event that they do not comply."

He said the ministry was preparing measures to ensure the exit of foreigners from the retail sector would not result in shortages.

"There is need to ensure that we don't create shortages in the economy, but certainly the ministry is going to enforce the reserved sectors rule," he said.

"And we will bring in the enforcement agencies from right across the Government departments and the local authorities to ensure that enforcement happens."

The January 1, 2014 ultimatum was gazetted in May, making it mandatory for all locally and foreign-owned firms in reserved sectors to apply for indigenisation compliance certificates.

Only locals will be given those certificates.

Those laws, passed in 2007, demand foreign businesses to cede 51 percent control to local blacks. The foreign shop owners have been criticized for taking retail trade opportunities from Zimbabwean traders by selling cheap imports.

Poor townships and city flea markets have in recent years been inundated by shops run by foreigners.According to state media, shop owners who fail to comply will be arrested.

#CODED-ish News::ASUU UPDATE: ASUU Finally Agrees To Suspend Strike Stating Three (3) Conditions [Read More]

After almost five months of failed negotiations, Nigerian university lecturers have agreed to end the ongoing strike.

However, the teachers, under the umbrella of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have stated three conditions which must be met before the strike could be called off.

The conditions will be presented to President Goodluck Jonathan along with the Federal Government team today and if all parties are in agreement with the terms, the strike would be called off.

Nigerian Eye reports:

The ASUU leadership has banned its local chapters and zonal chairmen from talking to the media until after the session with the President. ASUU President Dr. Nasir Issa Fagge and other leaders of the union were being expected in Abuja last night.
According to a source, who was part of the ASUU session at Mambayya House in Kano, the conditions are:

•Commitment from the President that any review or reconsideration or renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement will not substantially affect the pact which is the cause of the ongoing strike;

•Immediate payment of all outstanding salary arrears and allowances of varsity teachers without victimization; and

•A written commitment from the President that the Federal Government will commit N225billion annually to the funding of universities for the next four years.

There is a fourth condition, which is said to be "personal" to ASUU, bordering on the need to be wary of gradual loss of public sympathy.

The union leaders were said to have recognised public goodwill for the strike and the need to avert any action that could erode such confidence.

The source said: "Our leaders are meeting with the President on Monday to table these conditions. Once the President accepts these three terms, the strike will be called off.

"In principle, members voted about 60-40 percent to call off the strike, but they added a caveat – that ASUU leaders should extract a commitment (signed and sealed) from the President.

The union is said to have insisted on the three conditions because during talks with the Federal Government, it was apparent that the government wanted a renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement.

"If ASUU had accepted to renegotiate the entire Agreement , it means there will be no basis for the ongoing strike. The worst that can happen is either having the abridged version of the 2009 Agreement or a phased implementation of the document," the source added.

#CODED-ish News::ASUU may call off STRIKE this week amidst uncertainty – Daily Independent

REPORT BY DAILY INDEPENDENT

ASUU President, Faggae
Prospects of university students resuming for academic activities this week appear to be in sight, as the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) met at the Bayero University, Kano (BUK), at the weekend.
Although details of their resolutions are still sketchy as at press time, a reliable source told Sunday Independent that the executive members of the union held their National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Kano on Friday, to take some resolutions concerning their strike which began on July 2, nationwide.
The ASUU official, who preferred to anonymity, confirmed that the meeting took place at BUK, as earlier reported in the Monday, November 18 edition of Daily Independent.
He told our correspondent on phone that the meeting was in connection with their protracted strike and modalities to bring it to an end within the shortest possible time.
He said part of the agenda tabled for discussion at the NEC also included ways in which ASUU can contribute to the burial of the late Festus Iyayi, who died in a motor accident along Lokoja-Abuja road recently.
Asked if the strike would be suspended after the meeting, he simply said that appears to be a reality, but it might be called off later this week.
The ASUU strike, which has grounded academic activities in all the nation's universities, has lingered on for almost five months now.
"Well, the NEC meeting is going on right now in Kano, but we are yet to come up with a resolution.
"Tentatively, the strike might be called off next week, going by the level of discussion here at the NEC," he stated.
ASUU officials had earlier met with President Goodluck Jonathan, following the protracted nature the strike had assumed.
The Presidency was said to have intervened by pledging to inject N1.1trillion into the university system to address lingering challenges within the next five years.
President of ASUU, Nasir Fagge, and his team, after the meeting with the President, were to convene their NEC meeting on Wednesday November 13, when the accident that claimed Iyayi's life on Tuesday November 12 occurred, while on their way to Kano.
The development had forced ASUU to suspend its NEC, and elicited diverse reactions from Nigerians since then.

#CODED-ish News::ASUU To Meet Jonathan; may end STRIKE on Monday – Leadership Newspaper

REPORT BY LEADERSHIP NEWSPAPER

Members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) yesterday ended their two-day meeting in Kano with a resolve to meet President Goodluck Jonathan today or tomorrow on the outcome of their parley.
It was learnt that the union could, after the meeting, call off the five-month-old strike, but with a caveat that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) should monitor the agreement it has reached with the federal government.
A source at the meeting told LEADERSHIP Sunday that the union will issue a communiqué on the decisions it had taken on Monday, adding that "we may call off the strike on Monday. It is one of the decisions we reached at NEC meeting. ASUU will meet President Jonathan today or on Monday".
The meeting was held at the Centre for Democratic Research, Mumbayya House, Kano.
The source said that ASUU had resolved that, in compliance with the directive of President Jonathan at their last meeting with him, they will present the outcome of the meeting to him directly.
He explained that ASUU had resolved that the CBN and RMAFC had to witness the implementation of the agreement it reached with the federal government.
According to him, it was the unanimous decision of NEC members to involve other parties, especially the financial sector, in the implementation of the agreement.
Other issues discussed at the meeting include the violation of ASUU labour laws by some universities, which have announced resumption dates for students when the strike has not been called off.
