#CODED-ish News:: ASUU members Clash With Catholic priest

A Catholic priest, Reverend Father Andrew Obinyan, yesterday drew the anger of members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) when he appealed to them to calloff the strike action and trust the Federal Government on meeting their demands.

The visibly angry ASUU members interrupted Rev. Obinyan and refused to say amen to some prayers offered by him, and shouted on him to leave the podium. Rev. Obinyan was booed while giving his homily at the commendation service held for former President of ASUU, Prof. Festus Iyayi at the University of Benin.

He advised ASUU not to give the Federal Government the privilege of satisfaction of fighting and defeating them, stating that he discovered that many ASUU members were retreating, as well as collapsing their structures. Rev. Obinyan urged ASSU to trust the Federal Government to keep to its promise by calling-off the strike.

According to him, “My appeal is to request you to make surrender the tool of power. Do not give the FG the privilege of satisfaction of fighting and defeating you. We rely on that voice. We believe in that voice. I humbly request you to surrender first in this fight. Continue...

#CODED-ish Breaking News:: Nelson Mandela, revered statesman and anti-apartheid leader, dies at 95

10 Nelson Mandela Quotes
Former South African President Nelson Mandela has died at age 95 of complications from a recurring lung infection.

The anti-apartheid leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate was a beloved figure around the world, a symbol of reconciliation from a country with a brutal history of racism.

Mandela was released from prison in 1990 after nearly 30 years for plotting to overthrow South Africa's apartheid government. In 1994, in a historic election, he became the nation's first black leader. Mandela stepped down in 1999 after a single term and retired from political and public life.

History
Born Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela in Transkei, South Africa on July 18, 1918, he was one of the world's most revered statesmen and revolutionaries who led the struggle against apartheid in South Africa.
A qualified lawyer from the University College of Fort Hare and the University of Witwatersrand, Mandela served as the President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.

His political career started in 1944 when he joined the African National Congress (ANC) and participated in the resistance against the then government¹s apartheid policy in 1948. In June 1961, the ANC executive approved his idea of using violent tactics and encouraged members who wished to involve themselves in Mandela's campaign. Shortly after, he founded Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the ANC and was named its leader.

In 1962, he was arrested and convicted of sabotage and other charges, and sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment. In 1963, Mandela was brought to stand trial along with many fellow members of Umkhonto we Sizwe for conspiring against the government and plotting to overthrow it by the use of violence.

#ASUU STRIKE UPDATE: Universities To Resume Next Week, With Or Without ASUU - FG

Read the official report below.

Nigeria Universities To Open Next Week, With Or Without ASUU- For President Goodluck Jonathan will on Monday, November 4, meet with the leadership of ASUU at the Presidential Villa.

AN official of the Vice President’s office who pleaded anonymity told Scan News that all hands are now on deck to ensure that the Universities resume next week. The President will at next Monday’s meeting present to the ASUU leadership the administration’s last concession for them to call off the prolonged strike.

A source at the Presidential Villa noted that if ASUU fails to call off, the Federal Government will then resort to plan B, which will be to compulsorily open the Universities, using the instrumentality of the governing councils and the school managements.Already, most of the governing councils of the Universities have started meeting to work out modalities for the compulsory re-opening of the Universities should ASUU fail to honour the personal request of President Jonathan.

It was gathered that security report available to the Presidency may have necessitated this line of action to salvage the Universities system from the direction it is facing at present. So, if the Academic Union of Universities fails to call-off this strike next week, the Federal Government will resort to Plan B!

#CODED-ish News:: No Need To Strike, We Have Met ASUU Demands- FG

ASUU JONATHAN
The presidency Tuesday said that the Federal Government has met with demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU and there was no need to maintain the strike, just as it stressed that the agreement was reached sequel to the last meeting held between Federal Government and ASUU.

According to the Presidency, the administration believes that with the agreement and the result of the votes across the campuses, ASUU has no reason for further sustenance of the strike, even as it called on the Union to comply with the call on them to resume work without further delay.

This is coming as the ultimatum issued to ASUU lapses Wednesday.

Speaking in Abuja during an interactive session with leaders of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Youth and Students’ Matters, Comrade Jude Imagwe who noted that a larger membership of ASUU campus chapters had voted for the immediate call-off of the strike, stressed that the directive given by the government was not targeted to threaten the ASUU leadership, but designed to show government’s commitment towards ensuring that all university students return to school.

#CODED-ish News:: We’ve Deposited N200bn Varsity Funds In CBN

Federal Government says it has deposited the N200bn promised as funding to universities in an account with the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie, confirmed this on Tuesday.

The amount is for renewal of infrastructure in the nation’s public universities.

Okupe, who featured on Channels Television programme ‘Sunrise Daily,’ said from the government’s perspective, everything that needed to be done had been done.

According to him, many of the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities have been agreed upon at the 13-hour meeting the union had with President Goodluck Jonathan which ended in the early hours of October 4.

“At the end of that meeting, the government proposed that everything that has been agreed should be put in a Memorandum of Understanding and that the two parties should sign. But the leadership of ASUU declined and said instead of that, they would rather have a letter expressing everything that has been resolved therein, and that will suffice for them.”

Okupe stressed that the attitude of the ASUU leadership showed that the seed of discord and evidence of bad faith already existed.

“It is unfortunate that somebody died but notwithstanding, that cannot be a justification for delaying the implementation of an agreement for 21 or more days.

#CODED-ish Gist:: Chris Okotie under fire as Nigerians blast his comments on Catholicism

Nigeria’s controversial preacher and former presidential candidate of Fresh Democratic Party, Rev Chris Okotie has been widely criticised by Christians and non-Christians alike over his comments that all Catholics in the world will go to hell because they worship Satan and are led by an anti-Christ Pope whom he described as a friend of the devil.

The comments of the once popular rock star turned celebrity preacher and politician provoked Catholics and members of other denominations who questioned his moral rectitude to make such comments.

Below are some of the randomly picked comments on a popular forum

Naijaman said...
I was born into the Catholic church. I grew and was tutored there. It was there that i was thought that there is only one God and he alone shall we worship. It was there that i was thought that we should not bow in worship to any image or likeness of man. It was there that i was thought that Mary should not and cannot be worshiped. It was there that i learn that you can not worship God and money at the same time as is the practice among men today.

All these teachings i received were backed up by the law of the church. So which aspect of the Catholic church is vexing ppl to condemn it so much. I think the major problem is not with the non-Catholics but with Catholics who don't really know what their faith is all about. No Saint is worshiped in the Catholic Church and no object is worshiped in the Catholic Church. If you really want to know the rights or wrong of the Catholic Church, you need to free your mind from prejudice and allow ursef to be led by the Holy Spirit for understanding cos most things in the Catholic Church which you see us doing are just symbolic manifestation of a purely spiritual exercise. May God guide you in the quest for more knowledge.

The Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomole, has been commended for apologising to and compensating a widow, Joy Ifije, whom he insulted while on an environmental inspection of Benin City.

Several respondents in Ogun State also suggested that the governor, whose wife died in 2010, marry the widow.

According to some of the respondents interviewed by newsmen, the meeting between the governor and the widow may have been occasioned by divine forces. The respondents were of the opinion that, being a widower, there was no harm in the Governor remarrying and that it would be appropriate to marry a widow.

“I am of the opinion and conviction that the meeting and the incident between the governor and the widow, which later attracted public attention, was divine.

“As we can see today, the governor felt for the woman, had to apologise over the error and even empowered her,” Albert Ashipa, a politician in the state, noted.

#CODED-ish News:: Chris Okotie Fires At Catholics, Say's "The Pope Is Anti-Christ, They All Worship Satan & Will Go to Hell".

All Catholics in the world will go to hell because they worship Satan and are led by an Anti-Christ Pope who is a friend to the devil, Nigeria’s controversial preacher and former presidential candidate, Chris Okotie, told his congregation on Sunday, leaving members bewildered.

Fifty-five year old Okotie, while preaching in his Household of God Church in Ikeja area of Lagos, western Nigeria, said the Catholic church is “a counterfeit church set up by Satan” and that Catholics “bow to idols and crucify Jesus every Sunday when they eat bread claiming they are eating Jesus’ body.”

“They are not Christians and have never been,” Okotie told a stunned congregation. “They don’t know Jesus. They believe that when they eat bread on Sundays, they are eating the body of Jesus. It’s ritual,” Okotie said.

He said Pope Francis is an Anti-Christ who does the job of the devil and that time is fast approaching when the Catholic church will pledge allegiance to Satan.
“The pope is an Anti-Christ and the Catholic church will soon declare for Satan. This is the end of times,” Okotie erupted. He advised members of his church to come to the rescue of Catholics and evangelise them. This, he said, was not out of disrespect but out of respect for the word of God. He said those who know the truth should bring it to those who do not know it in the Catholic Church.
Okotie said one of the Catholic most revered Popes, Pope John Paul 11, surrendered the Catholic Church to Mary, the earthly mother of Jesus Christ, instead of Jesus himself. He said even the current Pope Francis has also done same. He said Catholics are not Christians and do not worship the same Christ that he preaches in his church, at least the one spoken about in the Bible.

Cut down your list-NFF tells Keshi
The Federal Government has promised to pay the outstanding wages of Super Eagles' coach Stephen Keshi. The Minister of Sports, Bolaji Abdullahi, confirmed he had received approval from President Goodluck Jonathan to pick up the tab for Keshi and his assistants, who are owed a total of about 78 million Naira ($485,000, 357,000 Euros), while Keshi's share amounts to 36 million Naira, approximately.

"The Presidency has made arrangements to pay the salary arrears of the coach of the Super Eagles, Stephen Keshi," Abdullahi told reporters. "We (the Ministry of Sports) don't have the responsibility of paying the coaches.

The (Nigerian Football) Federation has that responsibility. "But the government cannot say 'let the federation handle it on their own' anymore. Since it was not in our budget, I had to appeal to the Presidency and everything should be cleared soon," the Minister concluded. Keshi, who earns about five million naira a month but has not been paid for at least half a year, took Nigeria to glory in the Africa Cup of Nations and helped the team qualify for the World Cup finals in Brazil.

It has been a week a good news for the coach, as the NFF confirmed Keshi would take the Super Eagles to 2014 World Cup.

#CODED-ish News:: "President Is Human": Why Jonathan Decided To "Come Down Hard On ASUU"

ASUULeaders of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) yesterday moved from Abuja to their respective campuses expecting crackdown, as the Federal Government has issued several threats.

President Goodluck Jonathan might no longer be directly involved in negotiation with the lecturers: he is angry for the ASUU leaders' contempt for the office of the President, their decision to issue new conditions and theim being allegedly backed by some external forces.

After spending almost a week in Abuja in hopes of resuming talks, the ASUU leaders were eventually left with no other option but to go back to their campuses. A top leader of ASUU said on conditions of anonymity: "Our leaders have returned to their campuses.

They were disappointed with the Area Boy or Agbero method adopted by the Minister. "The military style of the Minister of State for Education will only compound the situation. "So, we are back to our trenches as it was the situation during the military era.

We are ready for the worst now. If the situation becomes uncontrollable, we will also go underground and resort to guerilla tactics." {read_more} Meanwhile, a source within the Federal Government said: "We hope that they will not overreach their bounds, because what they have done in the last four months amounted to economic sabotage.

"If they continue to take the law into their hands by paralysing activities in the universities, we may try them for economic sabotage. This is also the extreme end the government may go too. "Let them study the enabling laws to see what they have been violating.

#CODED-ish News:: Protesters Disrupt Stella Oduah’s Award Ceremony In London

An award event in London was on Thursday night disrupted by some protesting Nigerian women who kicked against the inclusion of the Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah as one of the recipients of the awards.

The event, which held at the Radison Hotel, Central London, was organized by the Global Peace Movement to present “Peace, Development and Security” award to Governor Yero; while the Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah, was to get an award for “Aviation transformation and best performing minister in Nigeria”.

The chaos started when the citation of Ms. Oduah, who was represented, was being read as prelude to the presentation of the award. Suddenly, a woman who gave her name as Taiwo Akpabio started speaking and shouting, condemning the conferment of the award on Ms. Oduah. Speaking at the top of her voice, Ms. Akpabio said it was shameful and insulting for the organizers to give an award to the minister after series of air mishaps in the country under her watch, which resulted in loss of many lives, as well as the alleged scandal in the purchase of the bullet-proof BMW cars involving the minister.

Chaos and confusion descended on the venue for sometime as all efforts to calm down the protester failed.  Insisting that she had the right to speak out and criticize the insensitivity of the organizers, Ms. Akpabio had to be dragged out of the venue by security officials of the hotel. Weekly Trust reports that as Ms. Akpabio was being bundled out, another protester who gave her name as Maryam Awolowo took the floor and rained invectives against the organizers for giving an award to Ms Oduah.

She too was dragged out of the venue of the awards event. Both women asked rhetorical questions, including how much the organizers were paid to give the awards to the recipients. It took a while before normalcy was restored and the event continued with the presentation of the peace and security award to Governor Yero.
